Graduate Students
GW All-Grad LGBT Outreach and Happy Hour
ANNOUNCING
GW's new HAPPY HOUR for all grad students, from all schools and programs, who are LGBTQ or supporters! Wise and open-minded professors and undergrads are also welcome.
Believe it or not, you CAN meet new people and be in grad school at the same time, and you don't have to go to college night at Apex to do it! (Although we love college night, too.)
For more information and an updated schedule of events, visit our site at http://groups.google.com/group/gw-all-grad-lgbt-happy-hour - or feel free to contact Mike Overby at moverby@gwu.edu. All are welcome, and don't worry - none of us know anybody else at these things, either.
About us:
In coordination with GW's Lambda Law and Allied in Pride, a few graduate students at GWU are working to create a graduate-level social outreach for LGBTQ persons, their supporters, and anyone else interested in this community. We are specifically a social, informal group, meant to balance the professional and career-oriented work already done by various GW student organizations. Hopefully those of us without a LGBTQ graduate venue can begin to share experiences across life at GWU! Our first event will be a happy hour in January 2008, so please contact us for more information.
Lambda Law is an organization of law students interested in gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgender (GLBT) legal issues, employment concerns, and the fostering of tolerance and awareness on campus. The organization provides a network for professional and social interaction between GLBT and ally students, faculty, and legal professionals, and for the education of the Law School community about issues facing GLBT individuals. Since its foundation in 1989, Lambda Law has become a visible and active force at the Law School. The organization was involved in adding ‘sexual orientation’ to GW’s nondiscrimination policy, developing and implementing programs with the Career Development Office regarding legal job search issues facing GLBT students, and discussing the Law School’s position toward issues concerning military recruiters on campus. Ongoing events include a mentor program with GLBT attorneys in Washington, discussions on current legal issues and developments, attendance at national legal conferences, educational activities for major advocacy events such as National Coming Out Day and Freedom to Marry Day, and social events with the Law School and other local law student groups.
