Kurlander Program for Gay & Lesbian Outreach and Engagement (GLOE) at the Washington DCJCC

The Kurlander Program for Gay & Lesbian Outreach and Engagement (GLOE) at the Washington DCJCC is seeking a part-time or full-time intern for the fall of 2008 to begin on or around September 1, 2008.

The Stuart S. Kurlander Program for Gay & Lesbian Outreach and Engagement (GLOE) provides social, cultural, educational and public policy programming that speaks to issues, interests, choices and concerns of the Washington DC gay and lesbian Jewish community. The program's vision is to create a destination where gay and lesbian Jews and their friends, families, partners and other supporters feel comfortable exploring programming and events developed for a wide and diverse audience. By creating GLOE, the J hopes to engage this vital population within the broader Washington Jewish community.

The Washington DCJCC makes every effort to treat interns as valuable staff members that are part of a creative, energetic, and focused team. An intern, therefore, should expect to receive work that is both administrative and substantive in nature.

GLOE is searching for an intern that will work directly with the GLOE Program Director on several exciting programs and projects. Duties will include the following:

* Event Planning- Coordinating event logistics, working with outside vendors, organizing volunteers to staff events and troubleshooting at the actual events
* Marketing- Advertising GLOE events to other GLBT or Jewish organizations via flyering local businesses, sending out email blasts and attending community organization meetings, and maintaining all event listings on the GLOE website
* Outreach- Attending community GLBT or Jewish meetings and reaching out to schools, synagogues, businesses and community organizations

Interns receive the following benefits:

Equality Maryland (EQMD), the state's LGBT civil rights organization is seeking part-time and full-time interns. This is an exciting time to work at EQMD – Maryland remains one of a few states that is within reach of winning marriage for same-sex couples.

Interns will have the opportunity to learn about and engage in the political process and the inner workings of a nonprofit advocacy organization. We are a small organization, so interns will be given substantive and time-sensitive assignments.

Individuals will assist with a variety of tasks including:

  • Helping to prepare documents to use for grassroots and direct lobbying
  • Assisting with administrative office tasks
  • Helping to plan and execute marriage education forums for clergy and other constituencies

Servicemembers Legal Defense Network

  1. Legal Internship
    SLDN, the sole legal aid and watchdog organization for men and women in the military harmed by "Don't Ask, Don't Tell," seeks legal interns for the 2007-2008 school year.

    SLDN will select one full-time intern for intern positions each semester and three candidates for the summer, and entertains applications from 1Ls and 2Ls. The positions are unpaid, though SLDN encourages applicants to secure funded fellowships. Students may also receive credit in exchange for their services when permitted in accordance with law school policies.

    Ideal candidates will have strong written and oral communications skills, strong research abilities, and demonstrated academic performance. Ideal candidates will also have military experience and experience in crisis management and client contact.

    SLDN is committed to providing interns with substantial responsibility. Interns will counsel clients with attorney supervision and produce 2-3 written work products. Interns will master a substantive area of military law as it applies to lesbian, gay and bisexual service members. Interns will obtain significant legal aid experience in addition to policy advocacy and litigation experience.

  2. Policy/Grassroots Internships
    Servicemembers Legal Defense Network (SLDN) is a national, non-profit legal services, watchdog and policy organization dedicated to ending discrimination against and harassment of military personnel affected by "Don't Ask, Don't Tell" and related forms of intolerance.

    SLDN Policy Team
    The Policy team at SLDN is made up of three staff members, the Deputy Director of Policy, the Policy Advocate, and the Grassroots Organizer. They provide education to members of Congress on the "Don't Ask, Don't Tell" policy and on the need for repeal of this law. The Policy department increases the public and Congress' understanding of personnel and military readiness issues with respect to gay, lesbian and bisexual service members currently serving in the U.S. military and veteran's issues.

    Internship Description:
    The department offers a Policy Internship for undergraduate students. Interns have the opportunity to be very hands on in the department and are given a great deal of responsibility. They will learn about various aspects of public policy, grassroots advocacy, congressional outreach and coalition building.

    Eligibility
    College students, and recent graduates are eligible for unpaid SLDN internships. Policy internships are offered to those with strong academic backgrounds who seek political experience and have or are working toward a political science, pre-law, criminal justice, public policy or government affairs degree. Candidates should possess strong written and oral communications skills. An understanding of public policy and the legislative process is advantageous but not required.

    Availability
    Opportunities for internships are available year-round. Internships can be developed for a 3-4 month period, an academic quarter, an academic semester, or for a full year. To assure that the intern maximizes his/her experience, we prefer to have students a minimum of 16 hours a week.

    SLDN internships are unpaid.

  3. Development intern

    About SLDN:
    SLDN is a national, non-profit legal services, watchdog and policy organization dedicated to ending discrimination against and harassment of military personnel affected by Don't Ask, Don't Tell and related forms of intolerance. SLDN works tirelessly to lift the ban through outreach and education, policy reform, and impact litigation. SLDN also provides confidential and free legal services to the women and men in uniform who face discrimination. Since 1993, we have responded to more than 7,000 calls for assistance from service members harmed by Don't Ask, Don't Tell.

    Position Summary:
    The Development Intern will report to the Membership Manager and work closely with him/her by assisting them with donor management and other development activities. Development internship also incorporates events planning as well as fundraising responsibilities. Job assignment will consist of professional and administrative duties.

    Terms of Internship:
    Summer internship begins in May and lasts through August. Minimum 10 week commitment required. Interns work a minimum of 10 hours per week, but can work up to 40 hours per week. Office hours are usually 9:00am to 5:00pm, Monday thru Friday.

    Principal Duties:

    • Conduct data entry and acknowledge donor gifts. Track donor contact and maintain records in database, including typing correspondence and creating other documents as necessary.
    • Assist in management of donor files and maintain a well-organized filing system.
    • Assist with special mailings, including mail-merges and stuffing envelopes.
    • Assist with special events including donor and vendor relations.
    • Assist with major donor, foundation, and corporate research.
    • Maintain telephone contact with a variety of stakeholders.
    • Grant prospecting: Researching and profiling foundation, corporate, and individual donor prospects.
    • Other duties as assigned.

    Qualifications:

    • Team-oriented student who takes initiative, is attentive to detail, and is creative. Can just as easily work independently as with others.
    • Must be comfortable on the telephone with donors and stakeholders.
    • Have some organizational skills and ability to multitask.
    • Must be proficient with MS Office suite, including Word, Excel and Outlook. Database or data entry experience preferred.
    • Currently pursuing an undergraduate or graduate degree
    • Have an interest in donor relations and/or cultivation.

GLSEN

The Gay, Lesbian and Straight Education Network (GLSEN) is the leading national education organization focused on ensuring safe schools for all lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) students. Established nationally in 1985, GLSEN envisions a world in which every child learns to respect and accept all people, regardless of sexual orientation or gender identity/expression.

GLSEN's Chapter Organizing department works with over 40 chapters in local communities across the country. GLSEN interns will have the opportunity to communicate with new and existing GLSEN chapters, develop local and state campaigns on GLSEN issues and provide technical assistance and organizing resources to chapters. Depending on interns' interests and the organization's needs at the time, particular tasks may include leadership development, media work, fundraising, and special events, such as the Day of Silence.

Intern qualifications include:

  • Strong verbal and written communication skills
  • Experience with the Internet and Microsoft Word (Excel, Access and PowerPoint are useful but not necessary)
  • Background or strong interest in lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender issues, civil rights and/or education issues

National Gay and Lesbian Chamber of Commerce

The National Gay & Lesbian Chamber of Commerce (NGLCC) is a rapidly growing and dynamic non-profit organization working to expand the economic opportunity of the lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) business community. The NGLCC is currently seeking (5) interns to assist the growth of various initiatives during the spring 2008 semester.

  • Programs Internship
    Assist staff in coordination and development of programs, including the Women's Business Initiative and LGBT Real Estate Specialist (LGBTRES) certification program among others.   • LGBT Supplier Diversity Internship
    The Supplier Diversity Initiative is a unique program which certifies LGBT owned businesses and work to integrate them into the supply chains of Fortune 500 companies (our Corporate Partners). The intern will be assigned highly substantive work which will include: Outreach toward certified and potentially certified businesses, working with our Corporate Partners to assist in searching our certified supplier database, and development of policies and procedures for expanding the program.
  • Affliate Relations Internship
    Assist in the coordination of the NGLCC's grassroots efforts and the coordination of the Council of Chambers and Business Organizations (CCBO). The CCBO is made up of representatives from each of the NGLCC's 50 affiliate chambers from across the United States and around the world. The internship would also include coordination of a monthly newsletter to chamber leaders, as well as other information collection and dissemination.
  • Communications
    This internship is a great place to start if you have an interest in pursuing the communications/PR field. Substantive duties will include writing press releases and newsletter articles, developing and maintaining an archive of press clippings, development of web content, and communications support for various NGLCC programs and initiatives. The communications intern should be innovative and creative, ready for a challenge, and comfortable with using some basic business jargon.
  • Events Internship
    The events intern will assist the Meetings & Events team in planning and organizing NGLCC events. Soliciting for silent auction items, coordinating conference speakers and sessions, outreach to local and national organizations and creating marketing materials are just a few of the areas that the Events Intern can make an important impact. In addition, the intern will assist the department with updating and maintaining media tracking, periodic updates to the NGLCC website, conduct research to collect industry data and statistics, format, produce and distribute internal and external correspondence (letters, memos etc.), and assist with department filing and record keeping.

Development/Special Events Intern

The Cherry Fund is seeking a Development Intern to support the fund's Fundraising Plan. Interns gain excellent industry experience.

Responsibilities will include:

  • Assist in the planning, implementation and management of

  • Solicit item donations from private companies and corporations

  • Interns will aid in marketing and brand research, helping to identify potential artists that would fit with The Cherry Fund, as well as investigating other similar businesses and their business models.

Qualifications:
Interns should have excellent writing and communication skills, computer skills especially with Microsoft Word and Excel, and an interest in nonprofit work and philanthropy. Interns should be able to commit a minimum of 10 hours a week for 10 weeks starting February 4, 2008 until April 25, 2008.

The Virginia Coordinated Campaign is seeking highly qualified and motivated interns to assist in our efforts to turn Virginia Blue. We are working hard for Barack Obama, Mark Warner, and Virginia’s congressional candidates. Interns are full members of our teams and play a vital role in increasing the name recognition of candidates, identifying Democratic supporters, targeting and contacting persuadable voters, and developing and implementing our GOTV plans.
